Lula advocates to industrialize the Amazon palm oil fuel.
Tome-Acu (Brazil), May 6 .- The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, dnded today the industrialization of the Amazon region through initiatives such as sustainable palm cultivation for the production of biofuel.
"This is the beginning of a revolution in this region," said Lula in a speech in the Amazonian town of Tome-Acu, in the state of Para (north).
The president dnded the implantation, tera gold, of industries in the Amazon state to produce this oil, he said, can help to "reduce environmental pollution" and "create wealth", in one of the poorest regions and less developed parts of the country.
This plan, which is supported by the government and state oil company Petrobras, which aims to encourage the cultivation and exploitation of oil palm to produce, sto credits, fuel.
The program foresees a total investment of 1,300 million reals (702 million dollars) and includes two different projects.
The first provides for the production of 120,000 tons of fuel per year, for supply to the northern region of the country, and the other aims to export some of that fuel to the European market, in collaboration of, sto credits, the Portuguese oil company Galp.
The president recalled that, despite being one of the leading producers of palm oil in the world, Brazil imports "almost half" of the oil it consumes.
Lula said that this program allows the state to stop relying on the timber market, one of the major responsible for the destruction of the Amazonian forest, and dnded the virtues of the plan of the palm grove, which reused deforested areas.
The Brazilian Government estimates that around 2,000 farmers will benefit from the project, and generated 7,000 direct jobs in processing units and 15,000 indirect and benefit the region for the improvement of roads and bridges and accompanying the plan.
In that sense, the Brazilian leader dnded other development projects in the region, such as the controversial hydroelectric Belo Monte, which will be the world's third largest after China's Three Gorges and the Brazilian-Paraguayan Itaipu.
"People have to understand," Lula claim that assure that "the majority of the people" of the state of Para is in favor of the dam.
The work, which flooded nearly 500 square kilometers of forest and forced to leave their homes to nearly 50,000 people has mobilized environmentalists, indigenous communities and various social organizations.
